Obituary for Donald Hodges Handley

Dr. Don H. Handley, age 71 of Schertz passed away in his sleep on Wednesday, June 5 2013 at his home. 

Born January 21, 1942 to Russel W. and Edna Ruth Spear Handley in San Antonio, Texas.  "Doc" as friends and colleagues called him, graduated from Texas Chiropractic College in August 1970 and started practicing the art and science of Chiropractic at Handley Chiropractic Center in March of 1971. 

Dr. Handley was an active member of the Texas Chiropractic Association serving as president from 1982 to 1984; he was awarded "Outstanding Young Chiropractor of the Year" in 1976/1977, and the highest award given by the association- the "Keeler Plaque" in 1993 also being voted "Alumnus of the Year" in 1984 by the Texas Chiropractic College Board of Regents. Dr. Handley was awarded the prestigious "W.D. Harper Science of Existence" award by the Texas Chiropractic College in 1994. 

He was a member of the American Chiropractic Association from 1973 to present and was elected a delegate from 1993-2002. Doc was elected President of the Texas Council of Chiropractic Orthopedics in 1993-2004 and was a member of the American College of Chiropractic Orthopedics and Texas Chiropractic College Alumni Association. 

Doc was a member and served as president for 3 terms for the Converse Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association participating in constructing 4 parade floats for numerous area parades. 

Don was survived by his wife Vernell Spenrath Handley of 49 years and daughter Ashley Handley Sefcik and Jason; grandchildren, Benjamin Ryan 6 and Caitlynn Grace 4. His brothers; Russel "Butch" Handley and Carlie of Boerne, TX; Jimmy Handley and Peggy of Comfort, TX; Woodley Handley of Schertz, TX.
