Douglas E. Ray, D.C., 42nd Keeler Recipient

Born Palo Pinto County, Texas 1925.  Graduated Breckenridge Texas High School 1943. Entered Naval Aviation Cadet Program immediately after graduation.  Commissioned as a Naval Aviator in 1945, assigned to a dive bomber squadron.  Received honorable discharge at the end of World War II.

Entered Texas Chiropractic College January 1946 and was in the first class to complete four school years of chiropractic education, completing undergraduate work in January 1949.  Was licensed to practice in Texas that same year and established a practice in San Antonio where he has remained throughout his professional career.

Received a post-graduate certificate from Logan Chiropractic College in 1953 and had post-graduate training in Roentgenology under the auspices of the Lincoln Chiropractic College and the Texas Chiropractic Roentgenology Council from 1960 through 1964.  Completed the course in Medical X-ray Projection, United States Public Health Service, Washington, D.C. in 1969.  Was certified as a Diplomate in Roentgenology by the American Chiropractic Board of Roentgenology in 1965.  Was made a Fellow of the International College of Chiropractors in 1968.

Local Professional Activities:  Became a member of the San Antonio Breakfast Club, later to become Bexar County Chiropractic Society, immediately after beginning practice.  Proceeded through all offices to President.  Inaugurated a local newspaper advertising program while president.  Proceeded through all offices of District 10, Texas State Chiropractic Association.  Served on many local committees.  Organized the San Antonio Miss Correct Posture Contests.  Produced several local and one State Contest.  Sponsored two State Miss Correct Posture Queen champions in 1959 and 1960.  Inaugurated speakers team for public schools regarding correct posture and chiropractic.

State Professional Activities:  Member, T.S.C.A. Board of Directors 1960-64.  Secretary T.S.C.A. 1964-65.  President T.S.C.A. 1965-66.  Had additional responsibility as President due to the sudden death of Mr. Emmett L. Bauknight who had administered T.S.C.A. affairs for twenty-five years.  Selected Texas Young Chiropractor of the year in 1960.

Served on many T.S.C.A. committees but was especially influential and active on the Research and Education Committee, Miss Correct Posture program and in the total radiological sphere of activities.

Originated Correct Posture programs and methods of publicity for the State of Texas.  Established first chiropractic liaison with the State and Federal Governments in the fields of X-ray diagnosis and Radiation Safety.  This included acquiring Government speakers for Convention programs and free state-wide Radiation Safety Classes sponsored and put on by the State health Department in five locations in Texas.  Taught twenty X-ray classes for T.S.C.A. throughout the state in 1963-64 without charge.  Donated free time to teach X-ray Diagnosis to the Senior Class of Texas Chiropractic College the year preceding TCC’s move to Houston.  Helped establish an educational and research coordinating program between TCC and T.S.C.A., including the first T.S.C.A. Scholarship Fund .  Promoted syllabus guided post-graduate X-ray education with official TCC sponsorship.  Helped teach TCC X-ray Diagnosis classes in Dallas, Lubbock, Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Austin and Albuquerque.  Inaugurated publication of the first research treatise published by T.S.C.A. (Walter Rhodes’ TFS Units, in a special issue of the Texas Chiropractor, January 1966), and mailed to two hundred scientists and institutions throughout the world.

National Professional Activities:  Charter member of the American Chiropractic Association and served as Alternate ACA Delegate from Texas.

Principal national activities have been in the field of Roentgenology and radiography.  Was the first chiropractor in the South to be certified as a Diplomate in Roentgenology.  Helped organize, and get approval by the House of Delegates of the ACA as an official X-ray specialty group, the American Chiropractic College of Roentgenology.  For work in this respect he was honored by being elected as the first President of the American College of Roentgenology in 1969.  Served two terms as President.

Served six years as a member of Examining Board in Roentgenology (The American Chiropractic Board of Roentgenology).  The last two years served as the Board’s President.  Was the principal formulator, along with the other four Board members, of the Seventeen Classifications of Subluxations.  Introduced the Classifications at the Houston Conference of School Heads and other chiropractic officials in November 1972 and chaired the meeting in which these subluxations were accepted as standard nomenclature by the entire profession.

Is a charter member of the AC’s Council on Roentgenology.  Served for the past six years on the ACA Radiological Health Consultants Committee, which coordinates the profession’s radiological health activities with the Federal Bureau of Radiological Health.  This committee also makes recommendations regarding National and State Radiological legislation.

Is considered one of the leading chiropractic authorities in diagnostic Roentgenology and radiography and has lectured extensively throughout the United States and Canada.  Is on the post-graduate faculty of Texas Chiropractic College, National College of chiropractic, Logan Chiropractic College and the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College.  Chaired a special committee of the College of Roentgenology to establish a standard syllabus for Board qualifying post-graduate courses of study to be presented by the various schools throughout the United States.  Was one of the teachers of these classes in more than twenty-five cities in the United States and Canada.

Has authored several technical articles for State and National journals.  Was a contributing author for the ACA published BASIC CHIROPRACTIC PROCEDURAL MANUAL written especially to orientate Doctors of Chiropractic for handling Medicare patients.  Was on the Instructional Medicare Staff and Medicare coordinating and lecturing team.  Is currently liaison for the ACA Council of Roentgenology with the ACA Insurance Commission and Board of Governors.

Civic Activities: Member and past Deacon, Presbyterian Church.  Past Sunday School teacher.  Coached church softball team.  Assistant Scout Master.  Past President East Side Improvement League with responsibilities of obtaining part and recreation facilities for young people and other local improvements.  Served as Program Chairman, Vice President and President of PTA and member of high school Boosters Club.

Active member of San Antonio Jaycees for ten years serving two years on Board of Directors. Worked on more than one hundred civic projects where he made many important contacts for chiropractic with members of the news media.  Was Director in charge of Fiesta San Jacinto River Parade, Summer Camp projects for underprivileged children, Miss San Antonio Contests (Miss Correct Posture of Texas for 1959 became Miss San Antonio of 1960), and Annual Fire Prevention Week and Miss Spark Contests.  Inaugurated an annual Correct Posture Contest for Jaycees.  Received annual Merit Award 1960 for outstanding service.  Has been made Honorary Mayor of San Antonio and Admiral in the Texas Navy.

He and Anne have been married twenty-eight years and have three married daughters, Annette, Tee and Melody.
