Chester Y. Smith, D.C., 67th Keeler Recipient

Dr. Smith was born in Hillsboro, Texas on January 4, 1944 to Bonnie and S.E. Smith.  He has two brothers, George and Michael, and a sister, Glenna.  At age of 3 months, his father went to fight in WWII and the family moved to Big Spring, Texas to live close to family and the PX.  He graduated from Big Spring High School in 1962 and move to Houston to attend the University of Houston.

While attending the University of Houston, he met his wife-to-be at church (really) and has been married to his lovely wife Terrie 34 years.  They have three children, Cary, Robyns and Jason, and five grand children and expect more.  He was introduced to chiropractic through Terries’ family  for treatment of migraine headaches.  Their experience with chiropractic began with treatment of Terrie for polio.

Dr. Smith is a 1970 graduate of Texas Chiropractic College and served a two year internship at Homestead Road Osteopathic Hospital in Houston performing histories and physicals on admitted patients and circulating through all the emphasis of hospital diagnostics and treatment.  His interest was sparked in radiology under the direction of Dr. Doll, the first DO to pass and be awarded Diplomate from the American College of Radiology.

Dr. Smith earned his Diplomate in Radiology in 1978 from Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Canada, and certification fellowships in CT and MRI from the University of Florida:  Murray Solomon, MD, DABR in California: and served a six month residency under the direction of Stephen Vancura, MD, DABR at Central Plex Hospital in Killeen, Texas.

Following receiving his Diplomate in 1978, he became head of the department of radiology at Texas Chiropractic College and remained in this position for 2 years.  He moved into private practice in Rockdale, Texas in 1980 serving patients with chiropractic care and radiology services.  He has continued a part time private practice in Rockdale serving patient’s needs and full time radiology in Rockdale and in Austin, providing radiology reading and diagnostic services for numerous MRI/Radiology centers.  He served as Vice President of the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology Giving certification examinations for new diplomats in radiology.

He is a member of ACA, TCA, ACCR, and Austin Chiropractic Associations.  He has served on numerous committees for TCA including Radiology.  Practice Parameters and Protocol, Medicare, and helped write the Texas Guidelines for Chiropractic Quality Assurance and Practice Parameters.

Dr. Smith provides professional education lectures in clinical radiology to his colleagues.  He enjoys working with good doctors helping to make their practices better by providing accurate and detailed radiology reports and services.

As a resident of a small town, Lexington, Texas, he served a three-year term on the LISD school board serving as vice president.  He is past member of the Rotary and Kiwanis Service Clubs and is a member of the local Chamber of Commerce.  He is an active member of Lexington United Methodist churches and has served as chairman of the board and financial chairman.

Numerous honors have been bestowed on Dr. Smith including regent Emeritus of TCC, Alumnus of the Year – TCC.  The Keeler Plaque and recognition by one’s colleagues is the highest and most humbling honor to be presented by the Texas Chiropractic Association Doctors.
