John Robert McMurrain, D.C., 27th Keeler Recipient

Dr. John Robert McMurrain was born February 26, 1920, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Sterling T. McMurrain, pioneer Texas chiropractor, recipient of the Keeler Plaque in 1958.

Dr. John was educated in the Dallas Public Schools and took his undergraduate work at S.M.U. and Baylor University, majoring in zoology and minoring in chemistry and psychology.  He attended the Universal-Lincoln Chiropractic College and received his D.C. and Ph.C. Degrees from the Texas Chiropractic College in 1942.  Since graduation he has been a student of advanced chiropractic technique and has studied under many post-graduate teachers.

On July 7, 1945 Miss Tiny Bennett, daughter of the prominent Dr. and Mrs. George I. Bennett of Dallas (recipient of the Keeler Plaque - 1938) became the bride of Dr. McMurrain.  They have three lovely children:  Margaret Corrinne, age 15, John Robert, Jr., age 13 and Betsy Bruce, age 5.

From the beginning of his professional career Dr. McMurrain has been aware of the responsibility of a professional leader to his community.  He was one of the organizers of the Garland Kiwanis Club and served as its president in 1954.  He has been chairman of Garland Citizen’s Traffic Commission, a Director of the Garland Welfare Commission, a member of the Garland Park and Recreation Board and other committees interested in the welfare of his community.  He has consistently contributed to the religious atmosphere of his community.  He has been a deacon in the baptist church and taught a men’s Bible class.

Always ready to serve his profession, Dr. McMurrain has been president of the Dallas County Chiropractic Society, Secretary and president of the District #5, T.S.C.A., served on numerous standing and special committees, served two terms as secretary and is concluding two terms as vice president of the Texas State Chiropractic  Association.

Dr. John R. McMurrain was awarded the Keeler Plaque at the Texas State Chiropractic Association Convention, held in Houston in 1960, because of his outstanding service to the chiropractic profession in the field of insurance relations.  He was instrumental in gaining recognition of the chiropractic profession in the school child insurance program for over 75% of the school children of Texas.  He has delivered many lectures to seminars held on insurance relations, x-ray interpretation and radiation and chiropractic office procedure.

Dr. Charles C. Lemly, recipient of the Keeler Plaque in 1959, said in his introductory remarks: “bring up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:16

From birth Dr. John Robert McMurrain has personified CHIROPRACTIC.
